National Park Service Impact

Friends of Katahdin Woods & Waters supports the National Park Service through direct grants and in-kind contributions, as well as through local and national advocacy efforts. Your generosity makes this work possible!

Since 2017, our impact has included:

  • $2.7 million in direct grants to the National Park Service
    • Priority Park Project grants from Friends support road and signage improvements, the Loop Road Overlook renovation, bridge and culvert replacements to improve aquatic passage for endangered Atlantic Salmon, and much more
    • Funds for Art in the Park and community programs
  • $22.4 million in in-kind support
    • Funds towards construction of Tekakpimek Contact Station
    • Seven new tent sites at the historic Lunksoos Camps
    • New equipment, including 2 vehicles in 2024 and CAT excavator in 2022
    • Trail crew funding for in-park work
    • Visitor services through maps, guides, and promotion
    • Office and contact station space in Patten
    • Monument-related educational programs

Community Impact

In addition to our direct support of the National Park Service, Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters is invested in Katahdin region and Wabanaki communities. Here are some highlights of our impact:

  • Provided over 14,000 student experiences in the Katahdin region with over 2,000 teachers and volunteers since the inception of the Katahdin Learning Project, all free of charge
  • Contributed $1 million to creation of the Wabanaki Community Foundation
  • Participated actively in regular planning meetings with the Katahdin region community.
  • Partner with Katahdin region non-profits and businesses to provide free community programs for youth.
